A Universe of Stories

The Coleman Public Library concluded its Summer Reading Program and Youth Book Club “A Universe of Stories!” on June 26th, 2018 @ 10:00 am in the Library Community Room.

Librarian Sue Dossey gave a short program to those 68 in attendance for the Awards Program. The program is sponsored by Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), a consortium of states working together to provide high-quality summer reading programs, Texas State Library & Archives, Friends of the Coleman Public Library. This year the Coleman Public Library received a grant by The Coleman County Foundation in the amount of $2,500.00. Two thousand of this grant was for the reading program inspired books for boys and girls to check out and $500.00 for the Stars & Science Austin, a dome shaped Planetarium. Program presenter Bobby Corley presented different age level programs each hour. Not only were the reading program children invited to see the planetarium, but shows were scheduled for the public, as well, with 109 people viewers.

Plans for the Summer Reading Program begins the first weekend in March with the Friends of the Library Annual Book/Bake sale. All proceeds go towards the reading program to help pay for the children’s book bags, arts and crafts activities, programs and the Grand Prizes. Those returning their reading logs and completing their reading requirements receive a reading certificate and coupons from local businesses. The coupons included one free swim pass from the City of Coleman, one free ice cream cone from Santa Anna Dairy Queen, one free personal pan pizza from Coleman Pizza Hut, one free drink from Coleman Best Fried Chicken and one free drink from Owl Drug Store. The Friends of the Library would also like to thank the following businesses and organizations for additional donations to the reading program: Davis Farm & Ranch Supply – Jay & Tammy Davis, Ron & Diane Owens, Coleman Interbank, Shoppin Baskit Food Center, Inc., Coleman Veterinary Clinic, Coleman County State Bank, Coleman County Telephone Corporative, *plus school bags, Mike Ray, Cooper Supply, Inc. Coleman Chiropractic PPLC, and Coleman County Electric Cooperative, Inc.

Lift off Day began on June 5th @ 10:00 am. Several activities were available for the children to enjoy. These included an arts & craft station, coloring & learning stations, a guessing game and Junior High National Honor students, Zac, Tony, Aiden and Emi Calfa read stories in different parts of the library to children attending. Friends provided refreshments. June 12th Friends provided a special program with Kristin Henn and her friends “Move Your Tale”, improv performers from Austin Texas. This was the third time for her to come to Coleman and the kids had a great time again with laughter heard all over the library. That afternoon Natalee Rose and her mother, Sandra, had a program for the Toddler/Pre-K/Kindergarten group. After story time children worked with constellation stiches puzzles and then went outside to make chalk rockets.

Bridget Wakefield chaired the Youth Book Club. Members were required to read “October Sky” by Homer Hickam. Students met June 12th for the “Move your Tale” program and 19th for a book discussion and entered the Planetarium Dome together to watch a program for their age level.

Celebration Day kicked off on June 26th at 10:00 am. Those turning in their reading or timed logs received received the reading certificate and coupons from local sponsors. The fun started off with a pizza Party, cookies and drink provided by the Friends of the Library. A total of 146 children signed up for the reading program and a total of 42 completed their logs.

Announcements were made for the winner of the Alien Guessing Game. Rebekah Jones was the winner of $25 cash. Rebekah guessed 147 Aliens and there was 148 in the jar.

Grand Prize cash winners were: $75 – Kaname Hernandez, $50 – Rhyder Fikes and $25 - Joshua Quinonez

Those winning a book were: Otis Wagner, Maya Salas, Braylee Golson, Rebekah Jones, Ethan Hemphill, Rhyder Fikes, and Scout Hausen.

The 2019 Summer Reading Program Committee are: Dixie Bible – Friends of the Coleman Public Library Prsident, Library Advisory Board Members – Sandra Rose, Vicki Calfa, Tammy Davis, Tammy Swening, Sarah Beal and Bridget Wakefield. A big Thank You to all these ladies for their hard work in providing educational but fun programs for the community.
